6 Things That Negatively Affect Your Family’s Physical and Mental Health

It can be hard to get out of bed and face the day when you’re feeling down. However, it can be even harder when your whole family feels that way. But there are things you can do to help everyone feel better both physically and mentally. Here are some tips to help promote good physical and mental health for you and your family.

1. Eating too much sugar

Sugar is known to be bad for you, but it’s not just the chocolate bars and sweets that are causing problems. Even if you and your family are eating foods like bread, pasta, or cereal that say they’re low in sugar, there is often added sugar. So be sure to check the labels carefully before buying anything at the supermarket!

Also, consider that while sugar can temporarily give you energy, it’s not doing you any favors in the long run. Try to reduce your family’s sugar intake by encouraging fresher fruit and vegetables, which are packed full of vitamins and minerals.

2. Living with stress

Stress is a killer, and it’s something that we all have to deal with. If you or your family constantly feel stressed about work, home or relationships, try to find time each day when you can relax. You can also encourage your family to practice relaxation techniques, like deep breathing or meditation. This way, you can all be less stressed and healthier.

Additionally, stress can cause your blood pressure to rise and lead to health problems like heart disease. Therefore, aside from relaxation techniques, exercise regularly, get enough sleep, and have yourself checked to see if your blood pressure is high. Teeth grinding is another condition that can be caused by stress. This can lead to headaches, jaw pain, and even cracked teeth. Luckily, orthodontics can help with this! Orthodontics appliances like braces and retainers can help to realign your teeth and relieve the pressure on your jaw, giving you relief from pain.

3. Sleep deprivation

The importance of sleep cannot be overstated. A lack of sleep can affect every aspect of your life, from how you feel physically and mentally to how productive you are at work or school. In fact, many people with depression or anxiety have difficulty sleeping because their bodies are constantly in fight-or-flight mode.

The body is programmed to release cortisol when it senses danger—often referred to as the stress hormone—which helps us respond quickly and effectively in times of emergency. Unfortunately, when our stress response system is activated too often or for no apparent reason (like being up late studying), this can lead to chronic activation of our stress response systems. It results in physical symptoms such as headaches or stomachaches and mental symptoms such as anxiety or depression.

4. Cluttered and unorganized space

A clean and organized environment can help you feel more relaxed and in control of your life. You may not realize how much the clutter around us affects our moods, but when there’s too much “stuff” everywhere, it can be overwhelming. In fact, one study found that people who live in a cluttered home for an extended period experienced symptoms similar to those of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). So by having an organized space in your home, you and your family can experience a higher quality of life.

5. Lack of nutritious foods

If you’re feeling sluggish and tired, your family’s diet may be to blame. If you or your loved ones are eating enough vegetables and plant-based foods, for example, or if you’re getting too many empty calories from refined carbohydrates and sugar, this can contribute to feelings of lethargy.

To start feeling better immediately, add more whole grains like quinoa or oatmeal into your family’s meals, swap out white rice for brown rice, choose lean meats like fish instead of red meat, eat more nuts and seeds, and drink plenty of water.

6. Lack of self-care

You are not prioritizing yourself, so your body is reacting to the lack of care. You may have a family to feed or a business to run, but if you do not make time for yourself, it will be difficult for your body to function at its best. This also goes for the rest of your family—if they do not make time for themselves, it will be challenging to care for themselves in the way they need. It’s a cycle, so breaking it can take some time, but it is worth it in the end.

If you don’t feel good physically and mentally, consider making some changes to improve. For instance, you could get back to working out if you haven’t done so in a while. You can even do this as a family to become healthier.

The bottom line

While these reasons may seem obvious, many people don’t realize how their lifestyle can affect their health. The good news is that making minor changes to your routine can help you and your family feel better physically and mentally. If you feel like your body or mind is not functioning at 100%, consider what is causing these stressors in your life and then look at ways to alleviate them.
